vis–à-vis

französisch1968,16 mm, black and white, 14 min. (at 16 frames per second), silent.

A fixed shot showing six persons, looking into the camera inertly. Gradually tiny, minimal movements can be registered.

"Werner Nekes snubs the critics, who believe film to be motion in performance, by letting six people play 'family portrait': in a rigid composition they stare into the camera for minutes on end, initially without batting an eyelid. One actually thinks it is a still, until one startlingly realizes that the eyes of the 'vis-à-vis' are alive." (Enno Patalas, Filmkritik, Jan. 1969)
