Little Night

französisch1979,16 mm, color, 14 min.

A sleeping girl is plagued by strange dreams; manifold images fuse to create a bewildering puzzle, which finally dissolves and gives way to relief when the agitated girl, calmed by her mother, falls asleep again. An experimental film, also for children.
"Little Night is an experimental film. For Nekes it is no more than a by-product, the result of a nightschool seminar held last year. This film was made by ten participants." (Manfred Kugelmann, Neue Ruhr Zeitung, April 12,1980)

"In Little Night Werner Nekes from Müheim has realized a nightmare in a very comical way, using his recently invention, a 'Scanner' that chops up pictorial continuities, producing a grotesque effect of wobbles and leaps, with a hopping bed and sundry spooks. One is reminded of Winsor McKays' comic strip 'Little Nemo', of George Mé1iès magical cinema, and of Edwin S. Porter's early special effects film 'The Dream of a Rarebit Fiend'. This film successfully spans an arc from cinema's early years to the latest (Nekes-) techniques. Very professional, very amusing." (Sebastian Feldmann, Rheinische Post, April 23, 1980).
