The socio-critical Karagiosis is the most westernized form of the coloured Asian shadow-theatre. It developed during the 19th century. As in the Turkish Karagöz the main character is ’Black-Eye’ (gr. Karagiosis), the man from the common folk. The plays were spread in oral tradition adapting the current situation in the country and in the villages and often replaced the newspaper.

Karagiosis est le reflet occidental du théâtre, haut en couleurs, d’ombres asiatique. Il s’est constitué dans le courant du 19. Siècle. Ici aussi, tout comme dans le Kargöz turque c’est le personnage issu du peuple qui joue le rôle principal. Les pièces sont issues de la tradition orale et sont adaptées en fonction de la situation dans le pays ou dans les villages. Souvent elles remplacent le journal.

Das gesellschaftskritische Karagiosis ist die westlichste Ausprägung des farbigen asiatischen Schattentheaters. Es entstand im Laufe des 19. Jh. Wie beim türkischen Karagöz spielt auch hier ‚Schwarzauge’ (gr. Karagiosis), der Mann aus dem Volk, die Hauptrolle. Die Stücke wurden mündlich überliefert, jeweils der aktuellen Situation im Land und in den Dörfern angepasst und ersetzten oftmals die Zeitung.
